Disney Hair

I was paroozing Facebook just now as I kill a few minutes before leaving for my hair appointment.  As Beth Moore says, I'm "blond because I pay to be." By birth I'm dishwater blah, and as I've gotten a tad older wiser my natural color has darkened even more to be a medium brown.  But, like Lisa Kudrow of Friends fame.....I just feel like blond fits my personality better than brunette.  It's like when I became a blond at 24, I let myself out of my shell somehow.  It was certainly a mix of things, but something about that white hair made me feel more at home in my personality.  So, as far as I'm concerned, I'm blond fa life....or at least as long as my skin tone allows for it to be.

Today as I was looking at facebook, one of my friends posted that she was watching Pocahontas with her kid. And that got me thinking. As a little girl, I love love LOVED Disney movies. Not because of the story lines, the princes, or the songs like most little girls. No, I loved Disney movies because of the hair. My lawd did those characters have the most fabulous hair. It was always so thick and moved amazingly in the wind. It cascaded so perfectly down their backs and laid so beautifully on a pillow. I mean for crying out loud, Ariel brushed her hair with a FORK and it looked friggin awesome.

Pochahontas' hair was my favorite. It was SO long thick and looked perfect no matter what she was doing.  Singing, running, swimming....perfect.  I was so enamored with Disney hair that I decided to create some of my own.  I had this yellow blankie as a little girl, and I would tie it around the crown of my head with a shoelace and pretend that I had lonnnng blond Disney hair. It was one of my favorite things to do when I dressed up....I probably rocked blankie hair three or four times a week. (Alright hang on. I need to pause a second my sister can quit laughing at my nerdiness....just a second more.....ok that's probably been long enough.) So you know how people say that Disney set our generation up for disappointment in relationships by making men princes and endings always happily ever after? Well for me, Disney set me up for disappointment in what my grown woman hair would really be like. Whomp whomp.

So while this is what I was aspiring to as an adult....but of course a blond version...

This is what I got....2" roots that require constant upkeep to keep em looking the way I want em.

And because my hair is so damaged from striping the color out of it, it hasn't grown in about 5 years. Haha I try my best, but it breaks at the same rate it grows, so I'm destined for a life of fragile, fine, medium length hair. There's nothing at all Disney about that.

Quick interjection:  I was getting ready to leave, I couldn't help but laugh as I looked at myself and remembered the post I had made about scrubbing out with a cute bag.  Am I playing the part or what??

So ladies, I guess this is me finally letting go of my Disney hair dream.  It's probably about time, right? :)
